about

The songs on the Oyster Girl EP are inspired by the characters, tall tales and scraps of modern folklore encountered by singer and guitarist Tim Jones during his travels around the UK. Based on a traditional English tune, the title track is a celebration of the increasingly precarious life of continuous cruisers on the London waterways, where a community of families, musicians and tradespeople live afloat alongside the bustle and noise of the city. Of the other tracks, The Aberdare Drinking Song is an anecdote drunkenly recounted by a Welsh chef in Edinburgh, and Sally Brown comes from a conversation in a car about potato picking in the 1950s, between the smoky stacks of Middlesbrough and Whitby’s coastline.

“The Oyster Girl is like a distillation of perfect summer evenings, full of tall tales, friendships and a few drinks. For great storytelling with real heart, catchy songs and all-round love of life, it’s hard to beat. A must-see band at this summer’s festivals, for sure.”

– Bright Young Folk

“At times reminiscent of Nic Jones, at others Tim Laycock, The Oyster Girl is an EP that doesn’t disappoint on any level, Tim Jones and the band have produced four excellent contemporary songs in a traditional folk style that will reward repeated listening. This CD has been on more or less continuous play in my car since it landed on the doormat & I still haven’t tired of listening to it. The Oyster Girl is a great example of quality over quantity and if you like great stories well told then this EP is for you.”

– FATEA

‘A Distance To Be Travelled’ echoes the passing of company, setting off on travels and aching for the parting … an incredibly moving song.

Tim Jones & The Dark Lanterns London, UK

Tim Jones is one of the most distinctive voices on the English folk scene. Able to alternate between mass singalongs and powerful stripped back ballads, his song writing and delivery of traditional material has been likened to that of Peter Bellamy, Nic Jones and Fairport Convention. ... more
