about

The church of St Giles was the last church on the way from Newgate Prison to the gallows at Tyburn in London, and from the 15th century it was customary for the churchwardens to provide the condemned with a final cup of ale before they went to be hanged – commonly called the St Giles Bowl.

Forged in the folk clubs of North London, the band are influenced by the traditional songs and tunes of the UK, and use this sound to help Tim Jones’ songs come to life. Whether in the a capella Harringay Races, Her Long Red Hair’s shape-shifting fairy tale, or the boozy singalong of the title track, a sense of the stories and melodies that underpin folk music runs through all the songs. It is an album too that revels in its London settings, bringing to mind influences such as Iain Sinclair and Patrick Keiller in its trawl through the edgelands of the city.

The album was recorded and mixed in a week at a studio on a dairy farm in Pembrokeshire with the aim of capturing something of the spontaneous and rough feel of an English Basement Tapes, or early Fairport Convention recordings. The sound of swifts swooping in and out of the barn can be heard at various points, along with the clanking of farm machinery masquerading as percussion! With recording finishing at 4pm every day for milking, the band spent much of the rest of the time wandering the cliffs, playing tunes at local pubs, and holding impromptu singarounds on the beach.

about

Tim Jones & The Dark Lanterns London, UK

Tim Jones is one of the most distinctive voices on the English folk scene. Able to alternate between mass singalongs and powerful stripped back ballads, his song writing and delivery of traditional material has been likened to that of Peter Bellamy, Nic Jones and Fairport Convention. ... more
